The following day, just after breakfast, Eve received an email from Kip Clayton. Sheâd asked him to get in touch if he remembered anything else he wanted to share and oh boy had he delivered. Heâd found a photo heâd taken of Saskia in the theatre where sheâd acted in Highs and Lows. She was in the bar, beaming, with a gaggle of people queuing up for autographs. And there, skulking at the back, was Rick Sutton.
Knew I recognised the little creep, Kip had written.
So heâd been right after all. Rick had been keeping a close eye on Saskia, even back then.
And heâd been a barman at Hope Cross TV Studios at much the same time. The question was, which came first? Did Rick latch on to Saskia initially and then get the bar job? Eve checked the date stamps on Kipâs photo and the one on Instagram. Yes, it had been that way round. Heâd only fetched up at the studios towards the very end of filming for The Pedestal.
Eveâs thinking was that one had maybe triggered the other. Kip said Rufus was already muscling in on his relationship with Saskia by then: meeting her frequently to talk about Last of the Lindens, taking her out to dinner so they could discuss her part. If Rick Sutton had been dogging Saskiaâs footsteps, heâd probably spotted the burgeoning relationship as well.
It seemed to Eve that his reaction had been to get himself a job where his rival was working. It was hard to be sure, but if she was right, perhaps his jealousy had driven him to investigate Rufus, to see if he was worthy of Saskia. Sooner or later, Rick could have discovered the director was married and his heartâs desire was being played. In the eyes of an obsessive, perhaps it had been a capital offence.
And what about Isla? Saskia had said herself that Rufus had had to argue for her to be given the lead in Lindens. And whatever Islaâs true feelings, sheâd spoken harshly about Saskia in Eveâs hearing. If sheâd done the same in front of Rick Sutton, he might have a motive after all. It all depended on how deep his obsession went. His presence at the two locations in London suggested it went pretty deep. In an email to Robin, she suggested Greg might like to look at Rick Suttonâs work history in more detail. She also replied to Kip, suggesting he share his photo with the police, but she couldnât force him. Heâd shown it to her in confidence.
She filled Robin in on Dot Hampshire too. She realised sheâd devoted a lot of space to Rick Sutton as murderer, despite the hazy facts. After a moment, she forced herself to cut and paste the evidence against Dot so that it came first. She liked the woman, and Eveâs feelings for Toby went deep too, but she was a professional. She couldnât be blinkered. There it was in black and white in front of her.
